![]() Here is Justin's 1969 Torino "Q" Code The 1969 Ford Fairlane was available in 16 different models. Most were Fairlanes though the higher end was called Torino. Torino was not yet its own car line, more of an upscale option package. The Cobra model was introduced in the 1969 model year though official known as Cobra through Ford Advertisements, sales brochures and the windows sticker that came on the car many people refer to them as Fairlane Cobras or Torino Cobras. This is probably due to the fact that the Cobra package, 428 CJ and Ram-Air options, was available on most Fairlane models and all Cobras carry a Fairlane Body Code (main reason for the Fairlane cobra name, but does not explain why one model is not referred to as a Fairlane 500 Cobra!). All designations are acceptable, but generate considerable debate. Another note, though I prefer calling them just Cobras, Ford did file the name Cobra with the AMA for 1969. But they also refer to them to this day as Torino Cobras but all literature of the time calls them just Cobras not Fairlane or Torino. Since Ford did not use the name on anything else in 69 it's hard to imagine someone confusing this car with Mustangs as other have noted. Production Numbers Ford did not keep track of production by engine or options. Production numbers below are based on Model Numbers. Source for these numbers is "Standard Catalog of Ford 1903-1990" by Kruase Publications and The Fairlaner News Letter Volume XVII Number 1 by Tom Schlitter. Like parted out cars. I have included them where the classification was possible without any doubt as to what car it is.
Last Data Update February 8th 2009 * VIN Code is from the ID Tag on Dashboard or Door Tag. 3rd and 4th digits. # Estimate remaining is 15% of each model. Some models like Cobras have a higher Collector Value and therefore will most likely have a higher survival rate. Talladega models are 63B and built on a Cobra fastback body. Total Talladega production was 748 (by my calculations not including prototypes (4) ). They were produced in January and February of 1969. All Models were "Q" code 428CJs. Cobras? How many were made. Well from the numbers above you can safely say that less than 58,000. Obviously not all were Cobras. People who have pondered this question generally agree that about 12% were Cobras. This would mean that were 3625 Formal Roof Cobras and 3582 Fastback Cobras or 7200 Total. Using an estimate of 15% that gives us 1080 still on the road. That was my original guess; I was wrong. Actual production numbers are just over 14000 Cobras made with most (11000ish) being fastbacks. The Fairlane Cobra Registry currently has documented 650 Cobras. About 4.5% of total, not a lot. The research goes on. Any comments, or suggestions, stories etc. Please send to jhuntley@ameritech.net Note don't confuse Cobras with 428 equipped Fairlanes or Torinos or Rancheros. I have run across quite a few non-Cobra 428s. The 428 CJ motors was available as an option on everything except station wagons. |
